The Relationship of Indonesian with Local Culture

Posted by Indonesia and Culture

Language is the cultural result of a complex and active society. Language is said to be complex because it contains the collective thoughts and all things that a society has. Language is said to be active because language is constantly changing according to the development of society. Because of its nature, language is the most important aspect in learning a life and culture of society.

Language as a communication tool consisting of the symbol system, which is composed on the framework of social group relations, can also impact on the structure of cultural interaction as a whole. US anthropologist Clifford Geertz and French anthropologist Claud Levi-Strauss agree to define culture as a system of structures consisting of communally or collectively shared symbols, symbols and meanings that can be identified, as well as public.

Language teaching is often separated from the teachings of culture (culture), and some even assume that the language has nothing to do with culture. It is acknowledged that culture is important to be understood by language learners, but its teaching is often separate from language teaching. Joan Kelly Hall (2002) argues that communicative competence, for example, does consider cultural aspects of language learning with more emphasis on language use, but in practice language is still regarded as a homogeneous system separate from the interaction of speakers in everyday life -day.
